I bring to you my recent work for my show I had the 6th of Jan. It was showed in Daas Gallery, I wanted to thank David Acevedo and Xavier Brignoni for this opportunity to show in their gallery.

The show is going to be up until the end of Jan. if you missed the show swing by! All the work is for sale and I have prints on request if anyone is interested. This series was inspired by interesting animals and fashion. I had two months to create this series. My inspiration came from two artist, Alexander McQueen, and J.C Leyendecker. McQueen was a great fashion designer! He had intrigued work of beauty in his clothing. And J.C Leyendecker was a great designer in his illustration with male figures.

I wanted to thank everyone that went to the show and the support! So hope you enjoy and if you have any question for prints or originals please email!

Hows it going everyone!!

Im introducing a solo show Im going to have, the reception is January 6th. the show is going to have 8 paintings illustrating fashion with animals! I've always been intrigue with fashion and how they incorporated animals with there clothing. So I'll be posting all the work in January after the show!! Hows it going!

I just wanted to share a couple things I've been working on. As of last month I've been working on a children's book called Electrical Wizard! Written by a great author Elizabeth Rusch. It will be published by a great company CandleWick Press. The story is about Nikola Tesla, he was a great electrical inventor! The official book will be out in late 2012 or very early 2013! The second children book is about Baseball Mud! It will be published by Lerner Publishing. Great stories and excited to illustrate them!

One more thing, the piece underneath was for fun, I wanted to paint with a over all blue pallet. I added a design element around the piece with scrap design paper that I had for a while. ENJOY!! Have a good Weekend everyone!!

Hows it going everyone! Here's some news.

Im very excited to say for the past 3 months I have been working on a short story comic book called Devil. It was written by Monifa Aldridge,great writer and illustrated and colored by yours truly, and Lettering by Richard Starkings.

The comic is done but is still in production to be printed by (Image Comics). I don't know the exact date when its printed but you will see it in stores and comic shops soon in the Back Flip Cover for ELEPHANTMEN #33.

The story is based in Depression-era (1930s) Struggling woman called Ruth and she meets a particular man..........I won't give you the whole story, you just have to read the comic book soon!!

The longer version of this story will be in production and will come out later this year called -Devil Don't be Teased-

Hows it going everyone!!

I've finally finished this piece. I've added a little bit about my step by step process.

The first step is the idea and thumbnails. I used tracing paper for my thumbnail sketches and then refine them until I get a solid idea. I was going to add my ideas of thumbs but its a lot of thumbnails that it will take up the whole site. Ha!

For this piece I got a solid sketch idea and started working around it. I've added some of the sketches that I've drawn with out reference.

Second step is after I have a solid idea I go ahead and shoot reference and refine the drawing even more, just to get the right proportions of the figure and other aspects of the drawing.

My previous post was my final drawing. after I have a very solid drawing I go ahead and transfer it to a bigger paper. My final drawing was drawn in Rives BFK tan paper with graphite and then painted with washes of acrylic and gouache and ink. I've added some images with steps of approaching the painting. Hows it going everyone! I wanted to share with you all, that now I'll be represented by Red Fox Literary for Children's books and other young reading materials. Hey Everyone!!

Hope all your projects are doing well this year! Another painting of dogs, I really enjoy painting animals.

This painting was for a very good client of mine. She wanted her Great Danes in a humor and respectful pose with fun color! I meet the dogs and they where huge animals, they were like ponies in a farm. Never meet Great Danes in person. I love dogs! Very friendly and beautiful dogs to paint! Hope you enjoy!

Hows it going everyone!! I just got Back from Miami, my home town! My wife and I were there for my sister wedding! I illustrated a painting for them as a wedding gift. Isn't great to illustrated a painting for someone you love and get a great surprise from there faces when they open it! I had a wonderful time!

Family!

This is my other family, that never complain, never cares if your poor or rich. They are there in the hard times and even in the good times. Always next to you, waiting for you to pet them. This painting was made for my wife's family. Her father asked me to make him a painting of his dog, the one in the middle.

So I had time during christmas to illustrated. It was a gift. When they unwrap the painting, there eyes were watering and there faces were glowing of joy! Thats why we as illustrators make paintings for a living for the love and joy people get in a illustration.

Hows it going folks!

I've always wanted to create a illustration with 1930s bikes. I've always wanted to buy a bike from that time period. They are design in a way that you don't see anymore out there in the streets, like hotrods and anything thats vintage. So I'll post the final piece coming up next week. I might even do a series of vintage bikes. This one is more of an action shot, and cartoony in away. Well see how it turns out!

New Illustration!! Im working on a series for an upcoming show in May. It has to do with the town I was born at, Miami.

Its a two man show, Orlando and I. The show is called "The O Show"!

So this is the 5th piece for the show.

This one particular piece is about a man Called Mr. Birch, who was the founder of Ft. Laudable, a man who loved nature. A man that had passion for nature. He lived in the middle of the woods with 13 acres of land. He was a smart man, a lawyer that grew up in Ny, he was tired of city living he wanted to do more with his life, thats when he moved to Florida.

He wanted to preserved the lands, make them parks for the people. He protected his land and his house hold. He would stand outside of his house with a rifle, standing near his favorite birch tree. That tree is still standing and its about 400 year old. This is just a pref. story to tell, there is more to come, but thats only going to be in the show.

Alice in Wonderland Show

Hows going Folks!! Been very busy working on projects these past days. Here are the results of three pieces I did for a gallery show in Miami.Its for this great gallery called Octopus Picture Framing and Art Gallery. The show is coming up in two weeks.

The paintings are not to big or not to small, 16x24, it was fun painting them, I need to paint them pretty quick. It took me 2 weeks to finish them. It was hard, because of work and the wedding and other stuff on top. But my girl help me out a lot. So I give thanks and love to my girl Melissa!. There is more to come. I have another show coming up, with Orlando Sanchez, ill post it in a bit.

Irwin Greenberg's Artist Survival Kit

I've still stagnated and halted these past few months but I've never given up. I think sometimes an artist's spirit is trampled by expectations and comparisons and doubts. But if it is strong and true, it won't burn out.

A co-worker of mine gave me this handout that I found rather inspirational - a "Survival Kit" of aphorisms by realist painter Irwin Greenberg.

Like a lot of realist painters, I started teaching as a way to stabilize my income. I was amazed to discover that it would be one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Somehow everything I had learned in my life found a place in the studio classroom. In addition, teaching forced me to objectify my thoughts and make them comprehensible to my students. But the greatest reward by far was getting to know that special kind of person, the art student. Their hunger to learn, and commitment to what Henri called the art spirit, has been a never-ending inspiration to me. I'm sure I got the larger share in the exchange.

The list that follows was an effort to crystallize some of the things I've learned in over thirty years of teaching. It makes up a kind of horse wisdom about painting, practical advice rather than fancy aesthetics. This "survival kit" has proved useful to generations of young painters as well as its author. There is an awful lot of blather about art, not at all helpful to students. I hope these aphorisms are something of an antidote.

Several people have felt confused by number ten. By "drink a glass of water" I mean, "avoid running to the refrigerator every hour or so." As I reread the list, I remembered the source of many of the ideas. So, here's a "thank you" to Ben Franklin, Frederick Douglass, Robert Henri, Howard Pyle, Abraham Ginsburg, Ernest Hemingway, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn."

1. Paint every day.
2. Paint until you feel physical strain- take a break and then paint some more.
3. Suggest.
4. When at an impasse, look at the work of masters.
5. Buy the best materials you can afford.
6. Let your enthusiasm show.
7. Find the way to support yourself.
8. Be your own toughest critic and best supporter.
9. Develop a sense of humor about yourself.
10. Develop the habit of work. Start early every day. When you take a break, don’t eat. Instead, drink a glass of water.
11. Don’t settle for yourself at your mediocre level.
12. Don’t allow yourself to be crushed by failure. Rembrandt had failures. Success grows from failure.
13. Be a brother (or sister) to all struggling artists.
14. Keep it simple.
15. Know your art equipment and take care of it.
16. Have a set of materials ready wherever you go.
17. Always be on time for work, for class, for an appointment.
18. Meet deadlines. Be better than your word.
19. Find a mate who is really a mate.
20. Don’t be envious of anyone who is more talented than you. Be the best you can.
21. Prizes are nice, but the real competition is with yesterday's performance.
22. Give yourself room to fail and then fight like hell to achieve.
23. Go to sleep thinking about what you’re going to do first thing tomorrow.
24. Analyze the work of great painters. Study how they emphasize and subordinate.
25. Find out the fewest material things you need to live.
26. Remember: Michelangelo was once a helpless baby. Great works are the result of heroic struggle.
27. There are no worthwhile tricks in art: find the answer.
28. Throw yourself into each painting heart and soul.
29. Commit yourself to a life in art.
30. No struggle, no progress.
31. Do rather than don’t.
32. Don’t say “I haven’t the time.” You have as much time everyday as the great masters.
33. Read. Be conversant with the great ideas.
34. No matter what you do for a living, nurture your art.
35. Ask. Be hungry to learn.
36. You are always the student in a one-person art school. You are also the teacher of that class.
37. Find the artists who are on your wavelength and constantly increase that list.
38. Take pride in your work.
39. Take pride in yourself.
40. No one is a better authority on your feelings than you are.
41. When painting, always keep in mind what your picture is about.
42. Be organized.
43. When you’re in trouble, study the lives of those who’ve done great things.
44. “Poor me” is no help at all.
45. Look for what you can learn from the great painters, not what’s wrong with them.
46. Look, really look.
47. Overcome errors in observing by exaggerating the opposite.
48. Critics are painters who flunked out.
49. Stay away from put-down artists.
50. If you’re at a lost for what to do next, do a self-portrait.
51. Never say “I can’t.” It closes the door to potential development.
52. Be ingenious. Howard Pyle got his start in illustrating by illustrating his own stories.
53. All doors open to a hard enough push.
54. If art is hard, it’s because you’re struggling to go beyond what you know you can do.
55. Draw everywhere and all the time. An artist is a sketchbook with a person attached.
56. There is art in any endeavor done as well as it can be done: shoemaking, cooking, painting.
57. If you’ve been able to put a personal response into your work, others will feel it and they will be your audience.
58. Money is OK, but it isn’t what life is about.
59. Spend less than you earn.
60. Be modest; be self-critical, but aim for the highest.
61. Don’t hoard your knowledge, share it.
62. Try things against your grain to find out just what your grain really is.
63. Inspiration doesn’t come when you are idle. It comes when you have steeped yourself in work.
64. Habit is more powerful than will. If you get in the habit of painting every day, nothing will keep you from painting.
65. There are three ways to learn art: Study life, people and nature. Study the great painters. Paint.
66. Remember, Rembrandt wasn’t perfect. He had to fight against mediocrity.
67. Don’t call yourself an artist. Let others name you that. “Artist” is a title of great weight.
68. Be humble; learn from everybody.
69. Paintings that you work hardest at are the ones you learn the most from, and are often your favorites.
70. Read values relatively. Find the lightest light and compare all other light values to it. Do the same with the darks.
71. Grit and guts are the magic ingredients to your success.
72. Let your picture welcome the viewer.
73. Add new painters to your list of favorites all the time.
74. Study especially those artists who are dealing with the same problems that you’re trying to solve.
75. Have a positive mind-set when showing your work to galleries.
76. Don’t look for gimmicks to give your work style. You might be stuck with them for life. Or, worse yet, you might have to change your “style” every few years.
77. If what you have to say is from your deepest feelings, you’ll find an audience that responds.
78. Try to end a day’s work on a picture knowing how to proceed the next day.
79. Don’t envy others success. Be generous-spirited and congratulate whole-heartedly.
80. Your own standards have to be higher and more scrupulous than those of critics.
81. Pyle said, “Throw your heart into a picture and jump in after it.”
82. Vermeer found a life’s work in the corner of a room.
83. Rembrandt is always clear about what is most important in a picture.
84. If, after study, the work of an artist remains obscure, the fault may not be yours.
85. Critics don’t matter. Who cares about Michelangelo’s or Rembrandt's critics?
86. Structure your day so you have time for painting, reading, exercising and resting.
87. Aim high, beyond your capacity.
88. Try not to finish too fast.
89. Take the theory of the “last inch” holds that as you approach the end of a painting, you must gather all your resources for the finish.
90. Build your painting solidly, working from big planes to small.
91. See the planes of light as shapes, the planes of shadows as shapes. Squint your eyes and find the big, fluent shapes.
92. Notice how, in a portrait, Rembrandt reduces the modeling of clothes to the essentials, emphasizing the head and the hands.
93. For all his artistic skills, what’s most important about Rembrandt is his deep compassion.
94. To emphasize something means that the other parts of a picture must be muted.
95. When painting outdoors, sit on your hands and look before starting.
96. Composing a picture, do many thumbnails, rejecting the obvious ones.
97. Study how Rembrandt creates flow of tone.
98. If you teach, teach the individual. Find out when he or she is having trouble and help at that point.
99. Painting is a practical art, using real materials -- paints, brushes, canvas, paper. Part of the practicality of it is earning a living in art.
100. So - most painters I know teach, do illustrations or other work in an art-related field. Don't be an art snob-survival is the game.

So here is the piece I've been working on for a few weeks. Its one of the biggest painting I have work on for a while. Its a story about a man named Henry Flagler, he was the man that brought money to Miami, he built and design most of Miami at the time, this took place in 1928. He was a man of ideas and a great designer. He gave a lot of jobs for people.

In my illustration, was based on his arrival to Miami, he came unannounced, he was designing a rail road that would lead from St Augustine to Miami. The Rail Road was finished but there was no train at the time. But out of no where, he just arrived in Miami. In my idea was not to show the train but to give you a mystery behind the man that faces our back towards the viewer. And everyone in the illustration is suprised that a train arrived and on that train it was Henry Flagler. So tell me your thoughts and ideas about the painting!

Hows it going folks!

Such wanted to show you my thumbnail process for my new project that I've been working on. I have this idea to illustrated my town that I live in. So its the history of Miami. There is so much history in the city you live in. Try it out for a change. Find a story about your town you live in and illustrate it. My approach is to illustrated 15 paintings and have a two man show with my buddy Orlando Sanchez. So ill keep you posted on the show. I be posting the final of this piece soon.

Hows it going folks!

Its been some time that I haven't posted any thing. Its been a crazy month for me. I only had a month to make 30 portraits and frame it and have time to work on client projects all at the same time. But all in all it was worth it.

So the gallery show was this past week. I'll be posting all my final portraits and three different poster designs I did as well.

As for the pictures of the show, I just wanted to share with you how the show went. Hosted by 19-ONE. The picture with me next to a couple is Lauren Oltesvig and Justin Oltesvig, they made it all happen for me to be in the show!! Justin was in the show as well. Awesome people and very humble. A gallery last week got in contact with me called 19-ONE invited me to be in there upcoming show. "19|ONE is made up of creative people who desire to collaborate, work jointly and bring the city together to experience good and substantial art, discuss it’s implications in culture, exchange amongst each other creative ideas, processes and straightforward support and encourage other Miami artists." So I have been working on a project for my self about two weeks already. I've been studying how light and dark hits a face and how color interacts with the value of a portrait. Been very intrigue with Gary Kelly, Ramon Casas, Leyendecker work these pass days, its my inspiration. So now Its going to be a on going project until the gallery show. I'll be viewing the piece's after the gallery show in my blog.

USING OILS AGAIN!!! Its been awhile for me, Im a acrylic kind a guy. But I had fun, I was using Mark English technique. Try it out folks, there is step by step images and videos of Mark doing his magic on the Illustration Academy. It took me about an hour to do. Great exercise to do before you do an illustration! Its always good to draw some figures or portraits before your work, it looseness your drawing.

Ideas and bumps on the road

Hows it going again,

When a client gives you an idea for a piece, you first need to think about the things they are asking for in the illustration. When you are going for a conceptual idea, the client begins to ask too many questions. Why this? and why that? For this reason it is always smart to do something simple and straight to the point. However, there is always ways of creating pieces that are conceptual and simple simultaneously.

I am telling you this because I had a similar occurrence which taught me a lesson. My topic for the Gulf Coast 500 Magazine, was to illustrate "How businesses are taking shelter and waiting for the storm to pass," it sounded like an easy idea. Unfortunately, when working in a time crunch it is not smart to think of something grand. But I thought I was up for the challenge. I tried to pitch the idea of a CEO covering the fresh and new business men taking shelter under his rain coat. I sent the sketch to Gulf Coast and at first they were all for it, until the final. Their reason was because of the gloomy color palette. Therefore, always explain to the client their color choices before you create the final. They were expecting something more with color and joy to it. So I learned my lesson.

Explain the process to the client and always send them a color pallet they can choose from. Below are my thumbnails I sent them for the first illustration. Its sometimes good to learn these mistakes when you are first starting as an illustrator, then you make sure to corrected them for the future.

My friend Andrew Wright told me a good way in sending you thumbs to the client, first try to send two to three thumbs, send thumbs that are readable. When the client is satisfied with one thumb nail make sure to ask him to sign off on it and send it back via-email so you keep a record of it. So they will not be able to change there mind in the process. FInally, in my process in creating a new illustration I had to go through that. The second thumbs I sent out where the one the chose for the final. The one with the man re-opening the store. They were satisfied with the final results.

Hows it going folks, I've not been keeping up with my blog and I'm sorry about that. Its been crazy with my part time job and my art career. But thats the life of an artist. So here is something that I did for the Gulf Coast 500 magazine. Its a company base in Sarasota FL. They have asked me to do another cover for them. I was please to illustrated a cover. Here is the final Image. I'll explain more about the process i went through when working with a client. That will be on the next post.

Final: The Duel!

The Society Show!

Hows it going folks, I was so honor to be at the show. My piece was in the editorial part of the Society show. The show was amazing. Got to hang out with my friends and see awesome work by Sam Webber that won the gold award, Josh Cochran, Jillian Tamaki that won the siliver, Frank Stockton, Sterling Hundley, Gary Kelly and many more. Most of the artist were there at the show too. It was fun talking to these amazing artist at the bar up stairs in the society building. But thats not all, the most amazing part was standing near a original N.C. Wyeth illustration and speaking to Mark English at the same time. Good times!

I finally got my copy of Men's style Australia Magazine!

Hows it going folks! Finally got my own copy of the magazine that I did an illustration for after I got out of College. My first gig in the real world.... It was fun and exciting to work with this company. I remember during my school years, they always drilled things about art directors how they are tough on you. But thats not true, as long as you give yourself enough time to do the work and are punctual with their deadline then you have a happy art director. Well I leave you with my illustration, Its about people with autism and how they live their life's among us. Enjoy!

Story boards!

Hows it going folks? Some times you get a job that involves drawing fast and quick on your feet. I did these story boards for this company called PUSH, they are based in California. Great people to work with. These drawing were for a pitch to yahoo company. It was fun to work on. The drawings are fast and no shade or balance between focus. It was a quick turnaround. Im not an artist that gets to many jobs that involves sequential stories. Its not my strong point, but when you get something thats out of your comfort zone, its nice to work on it. It opens new doors for you, new ideas. It makes you think as a comic artist. Well hope you like.

Poor Education

Hows it going folks!! I'll start with the weather, it has been beautiful these past days in my home town, MIAMI! Love the sun in my face and the smell of ocean in the morning. Just kidding about the ocean smell, I wish I could live by the beach, but its near me.
Well I'll start with these three illustration, they are all the same but I crop them. I need some help guys, witch one do you think fits better for the composition. It will be a lot of help if you give me suggestion.

I was contact by an artist name: Sean, he started this colaboration with different artist around the world called World Wider, the link shows the site we all work in, and the process we display. Also it introduces all the artist work. Come and see for your self, and if you want to collaborated with the group, your more that welcome. Check out the site.

The illustration was to illustrated what I depict wrong about the society I live in. I find poor education is something that I find wrong in the states. Mixing poor and guns and lack of education is something that must be focus on. So its a montage of elements in one peace. Not sure if that works all together, but why not, it was fun to do.

Hows it going my fellow artist? Great news, I made it into the Society of illustrators Professional Show. I received a call from the Society last friday,( very nice lady I spoke too cant remember her name) but she said, two of my illustration were in the show. Wooohooo!!! I was in shock!! It is "Walking a Monk" and "Ice Cream Lovers", thank you Society for this opportunity. And too, my buddy Francis Vallejo as well got in to the show. His comic was chosen for the show. Congratulation to my friends and who ever made it in to the show.

Hey ya!!
Well I finally finish my original piece for Tata gala gallery show that was last week. I gave them the digital color format. But my original plan was to finished before hand but never got around too it, but now I did, this is the original color that I have planned for this piece. Its called lacquer transfer color. The steps are too scan your final image, then put it in photoshop to arrange the color shapes, then you print out in the size proportion to your illustration. But first you have to flip the image so then when you add the lacquer to the back of the image its the right proportion. You must used a laser printer, if not it doesnt' work. Then you put the color shapes that you printed on to the original, and you add lacquer to the back of the paper so the ink on the printed shapes attach to the illustration. Its like a mono type but with lacquer. ITs that simple, I think if it was explained right. Well then have fun.

Sorry for the late entry, Heres something that I had planned for a while to do, but I never had the time to illustrated. THe
TaTa Gala Show came up around the corner, its run by a gallery called Digital Three Studios hosted by Eric Jones. The show is for Breast Cancer, all the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen Cancer foundation.
I was working under pressure, I had so little time to work on it because I had other stuff to deal with that time. I gave my self 2 days to finish the piece. Working under-pressure is the key in becoming an Illustrator. (Haha!) Just joking. I always feel that if I push my self in so little time I won't have time to think, I just go at it, With out thinking. It was created with an SKB pen then with digital color, but thats not the finish yet, I have to go back to the original and add lacquer to it. Its a combination of laser color printer with lacquer on top, it gives a affect of a mono print. So enjoy illustrators and people and have a good day.
